Story of Everything Documentary by Steven Meyer – Highlights & Commentary

This movie Based on book return of the god hypothesis by Stephen Meyer.

My notes here do not represent the views of Steven Meyer or the documentary, but are some highlights in my words of ideas I found interesting with added commentary, shared for educational purposes.

I’m not on board with all his ideas, but it’s still a great production, and will build faith, showing that nature cannot exist without God. Even if you want to go with Big Bang theory, that still requires God.

First, here’s a generated quick overview of each of the 4 chapters of the presentation:

  • Chapter 1: The Beginning of the Universe
This section focuses on cosmology, detailing how the Big Bang theory and an expanding universe provide scientific evidence that time and the cosmos had a definite beginning.
  • Chapter 2: The Fine-Tuning of the Universe
This chapter examines the physical constants and laws of nature, explaining how they are calibrated with extreme precision to make life possible.
  • Chapter 3: The Complexity of Life
Exploring molecular biology, this section delves into the digital code found within DNA and the exquisite nanotechnology inside living cells, arguing that such complex, functional information points to intelligent design.
  • Chapter 4: Beauty in Nature
The final chapter explores the gratuitous, vast beauty found throughout the natural world, arguing that the presence of aesthetic beauty in animals and organisms reflects the artistry of a Creator.

Now for a deeper dive and some commentary:

Ch. 1 The Beginning

Materialism is assumed as a fact, nothing beyond material world.

Carl Sagan says universal always exists, nothing for the creator to do.

Slipher sees redshift, nebula moving away from us.

All galaxies shifting away red. Moving outward.

One can theorize that rewind it back, and you get beginning of universe.

Einstein suggests bending space.

Note: There’s nothing to bend. I’m not a big fan of the idea of bending space. End note.

If only gravity, all would combine. There must be anti gravity making empty space. Einstein puts this in, calls it a cosmological constant, an outward pushing force. Einstein chose an arbitrary force opposite of gravity to say it’s a static universe, not expanding or shrinking.

George lematra draws upon red shift and makes big bang theory.

Einstein didn’t like big bang, he wanted a static universe. Later he acknowledged that universe isn’t static. He says his scientific constant was the greatest blunder of his career.

Fred hoyle, secular atheist, didn’t like big bang, he makes steady state model, that there’s always been space and time, infinitely old, and makes matter continuously. Hoyle predicted no matter how far back you look it’ll look the same.

Note: Didn’t James Webb telescope show far out galaxies don’t appear young? This is no help for Big Bang. Big Bang has tons of problems with it, it’s rather disappointing to see it supported in this presentation. I suppose they are saying even if you want to go with Big Bang, even that needs God. Not the strongest argument in my opinion. End note.

Penzios and Wilson say they found big bang leftover radiation.

Stephen hawking comes up with singularity. Back in time with space very condensed and curved into 1 spot. Beginning of universe.

Would suggest a time without time or space matter. The singularity would be outside space and time.

If universe is finite, we must ask where it came from, what caused it. Something independent of matter, space, and time. Non physical. Immaterial.

William Sandage. Says it must be a supernatural event.

Robert Jastrow. Book God and the astronomers.

Note: Just because expanding galaxies doesn’t mean big bang. End note.

Note: Many take a deist approach, that God did initial hang then nothing. But God can move around things as he wishes, as he judges justly. The way I see it, God and his angels are constantly involved in our lives. Christian evolutionists should pause and consider the power of God to move faster and more effectively than supposed natural selection and its deep time. With these theological reasonings in place, they can better detect where ‘the science’ may be off, as it often is. God wants to help us find truth. Also be aware that the Devil wants to keep us from it. Nothing is neutral, not even blessed science. End note.

Note: Red shift could be this local garden. Who knows what goes on beyond. End note.

Hawking said because there are laws like gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing . From some math. That math makes space time and energy. But there’s no universe to describe. Math has no causal power.

Meyer says Math exists in a mind. So if math made the universe, that’s to say the universe is from a mind.

Ch 2. Fine-tuned Universe for Life

Fred Hoyle, says make elements in bellies of stars

Bijan Keating

Be 6 and He 2 together to make carbon 8, but this would make a high energy carbon.

Hoyle says this will start at high energy and settle down to normal energy

Note: Speculative of earlier higher energy carbon. End note.

Ward whaling. Does something and gets a carbon energy excited state like Hoyle predicted. Seemed to support Hoyle’s idea on how elements form

Universe is Goldilocks just right.

Hoyle admitted life must be a consequence of the fine tuning of the universe.

Hoyles fine tuning parameters are what convinced him a super intellect created the universe to make life possible.

Do robbers guess the code of the vault, or is it an inside job with someone who already knew?

Without guidance you would expect a universe without life. Fine tuning implies a fine tuner.

Big bang isn’t order from chaos. It’s a start of order.

Note: Big Bang advocates say it came from nothing, they are insistent on that point. I don’t see much value in trying to Christianize this theory, inherently designed as a godless explanation for the creation. End note.

We observe that entropy increases. You don’t stir coffee and milk and separate them, they join.

If universe is orderly now, must have been more orderly in beginning.

The initial disorder would be so small it would be nearly perfect

Newton epilogue to principia on universal gravitation. He says this beautiful system of sun and planets could only come from council and dominion of an intelligent being.

Moon recirculated oceans via tides to get oxygen deeper.

Magnetic shield from magma core

Note: Something causes it, miraculous to be sure. End note.

Other planets protect earth life

Timothy McGrew

They says multiverse is how to explain how our universe is the lucky one allowing complex life. Indeed, the fine tuned universe does require explanation beyond our universe. Anything outside our universe is supernatural. We point to supernatural to avoid supernatural. Is there a universe generating machine? String theory and inflation cosmology, they all require fine tuning.

Monkey on type writer given time maybe type hamlet? Actually he doesn’t even have all the right keys on the keyboard.

Multiverse just pushes the problem back without solving it. Finely tuned anything is intentional. Intelligent design is the best explanation for it.

Life as Simulation theory is crazy, no evidence, nothing to do with science. This is to say you can’t trust what you see. Same as multi verse. Not serious.

Chapter 3: The Complexity of Life

Michael Behe. 30 parts needed for flagellar motor. 100rpm and can change direction in a quarter turn.

ATP synthase. Turbine generating energy.

Turbines. Rotary engines. Etc.

Darwin knew nothing of complex micro machines. He said he there’s something you can’t explain by slight modifications, my theory completely breaks down. So it is with these machines. Evolutionary precursors wouldn’t work.

Parts put together are product of a mind.

Things look designed because they were designed.

Watson crick DNA, learned how genes replicate, by strands pairing and this being able to split and duplicate.

But what’s more they see genetics are a language. Like a digital bit string.

Douglas Axe

Precise shapes from even more fine tuning. DNA has info, directs construction of protein.

Cell isn’t a blob, it’s sophisticated processing unit.

Note: Some say Behe isn’t a scientist. He is. PhD, research, using scientific method, etc. Wiser evolutionists admit that he is a scientist, and try to disagree with his findings. End note.

Kenyon sees DNA isn’t a crystal lattice of simple binding.

Magnetism explains letters on a fridge, but their arrangement is from intelligence. Arrangement of characters isn’t explained by the forces.

Molecules don’t evolve toward life.

Probiotic to biotic must involve intelligence.

Specificity. Specified complexity. Beyond complexity of many parts, it’s their arrangement to make them do the special task. DNA is this way. DNA codes for some, so it has meaning.

New information is associated with rational intelligence. On all levels. Not spontaneous.

Bill gates says DNA is like software but much more complex than any we have made. And software is designed.

William Dembski author the design revolution

Informative needs to be read and converted into what’s needed to accomplish needed work

Richard Gunasekara

The cell machinery proofreads and edits.

Design logic in the cell is like but is beyond anything we have produced.

Protein can even be read 2 ways to do 2 different things. We can’t code like that.

Ch. 4 The Story of Everything

Earth isn’t just minimalistic for survival. It’s extravagant and beautiful.

Note: Love isn’t just about survival. Neither is beauty. End note.

The universe appears to be designed so it begs the question of design.

The beauty principle – true theories often. Convey beauty. Crick said of the DNA, it’s so beautiful it’s got to be right.

Note: Zion is beautiful. Less than Zion is less truth. Less than our best. End note.

The story of everything is purpose. An author behind everything.

Dawkins claims there are no signs of intelligence in the universe. But there are many of those signs.

Surprisingly, science revealed to us that there is supernatural. A creator. The universe doesn’t look like it’s been left to itself. Fingerprints of its creator everywhere.

Note: God is the author, not the other way around. End note.

Note: Many were involved in making this film it had to be a multi-million dollar production. Overall great stuff, though I’m not a fan of the Big Bang segment in the beginning chapter. End note.

Note: See John Lennox vs Dawkins debates. Though I don’t endorse all of Lennox’s views as he unnecessarily accommodates an old Earth, etc. End note.
